In fact, herpes is just as common in the LGBT+ community as it is in the general population. About one in six people carry the virus that causes genital herpes (HSV-2), and even more carry the oral herpes virus (HSV-1). These numbers remind us that herpes is a common and often misunderstood health issue.
Being a member of the LGBT+ community often comes with its own sense of isolation. Social bias, family misunderstandings, and even rejection from within the community can make many feel alone. When you add herpes to the equation, the sense of isolation can be heightened to an unbearable level.
The stigma of herpes is pervasive across society, and the LGBT+ community is no exception. Not only do we have to grapple with challenges related to our sexual orientation or gender identity, we also have to deal with the shame and fear of rejection that herpes can bring. This double burden can lead some people to hide their true identity or health status, further deepening their loneliness.
